Although the official number of drug abusers is 35,000, experts estimate the actual number to be approximately 200,000. Major drug abuse problems are the inhalation of volatile solvents, such as glue and paint remover; the injection of opiate extracts; and the manufacture of morphine, heroin, methamphetamine hydrochloride, and lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) in home-made laboratories. In response, the Polish government adopted new drug control legislation in January 1985. The Act on the Prevention of Narcotic Addiction provides for severe punishment for illicit drug trafficking; voluntary treatment, rehabilitation, and social reintegration for drug addicts; and compulsory treatment for juveniles and persons convicted of drug-related offenses. 22 references.
