This article describes the findings of the Bolivian Toxicology Laboratory when it analyzed 4,196 samples of drugs seized from 1975 to 1982. Over 89.8 percent of the seized drugs contained coca paste, cocaine hydrochloride, or related substances.
Abstract
Most of the coca paste samples could be traced to La Paz, Santa Cruz, and Cochabamba. With the exception of 1980, the numbers of sample drugs seized increased over an eight-year period, demonstrating the growth in illicit production that began in 1976. Coca paste abuse is a great problem in Bolivia. The most common form of drug abuse is smoking cigarettes containing a mixture of tobacco and coca paste. The article discusses the chemical characteristics of the drug samples seized and includes photographs of illicit drugs and drug processing. 17 footnotes. (Author abstract modified)
