Abstract
India is the focus of the historical review of problems encountered as that country moves from a peripheral to a more central role in global drug trafficking. Indian guidelines are suggested in the SPARC Addiction Research Core Group's "Recommendations on Primary Prevention," and Bombay (India) is the location of the community action drug abuse prevention program and the outpatient heroin detoxification program outlined. Several substance abuse treatment approaches are reviewed. Commentaries on the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and its Amendment, 1988 conclude the drug abuse portion of this Special Issue. Also featured are book reviews and a report on the National Conference on Women, Religion and Family Laws in India held in January 1989.
