The Mabel Bassett Correctional Center in Oklahoma City, Okla., uses the Lifesteps Program to help female substance abusers overcome their addictions.
Abstract
The program is located in a section of the maximum-security facility that houses approximately 300 women. One full-time case manager is assigned to the program. Treatment is conducted by the case manager and two staff members from psychological services. Each 16-week cycle of Lifesteps is closed-ended and can include a maximum of 24 inmates. The program involves 8 to 12-hour days and uses teaching as a primary treatment format. The program uses direct reinforcement of appropriate and desired behaviors, places the inmates in situations where they can experience others modeling alternative responses and behaviors, and reinforces the inmates' expectancy that their maladaptive behaviors can be discarded for more satisfying behaviors. There are detailed discussions about possible alternatives for responding to life situations. Program elements include rational behavior training, interpersonal communication skills, stress management, substance abuse education, group therapy, assertiveness training, values clarification, recreation, and individual counseling. Inmates also participate in self-help groups (Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Overeaters Anonymous). Initial results from pre/post testing are promising.
