Statistics on anti-Semitic incidents reported to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) in 1989 are presented in this report, along with descriptions of countermeasures mounted by the ADL.
Abstract
During 1989, 845 incidents of vandalism and desecration and 587 acts of harassment, threat, and assault against Jewish persons, their property, and their institutions were reported to the ADL from 44 States and the District of Columbia. The combined total of 1,432 incidents was the highest number ever reported in the 11 years that ADL has published an annual audit. Data on incidents involving neo-Nazi "skinhead" perpetrators are presented, and a geographic breakdown of vandalism incidents is provided. Data are also presented on arrests associated with the incidents. ADL countermeasures have included the sponsoring of security conferences; educational efforts that target anti-Semitism on campuses; technical assistance to Federal, State, and local law enforcement regarding the collection of statistics on hate crimes; the development of a security handbook; rewards for information leading to arrests; and sponsorship of a police training film on the handling of hate crimes.
