This report presents the findings and recommendations of the Alabama Attorney General's Victims' Task Force, which was charged with assessing Alabama's laws and programs pertaining to victims of violent crimes and with proposing changes to enhance victims' rights and services in the State.
Abstract
The task force consisted of 11 committees assigned to study and make recommendations in the areas of child abuse and domestic violence, victims' compensation and restitution, corrections, drunk driving victims, elderly victims, funding, legislation, media, preventive education, rape victims, and victims' rights and services. The findings and recommendations are derived from public hearings, statewide surveys, research, interviews, discussions, and workshops. Each committee report lists each committee finding and the recommendation designed to address that finding. Generally, recommendations focus on the enhancement of victims' rights and services through legislation, enhanced training, education, service coordination, practical low-cost improvements, and the use of alternative public and private funding sources. The provision of additional appropriations for victim services is acknowledged by the task force to be the most difficult problem facing the State in addressing crime victims' needs.
