The opening chapter outlines the help and hindrance of religious faith in assisting family violence victims. A hindrance noted is the disposition by some religious women to believe that submission to their husbands is a teaching of their faith. Religious assistance lies in the belief that violence is wrong and that God can act to transform violent families. One chapter guides clergy in the counsel and support of victims of family violence. Although couple counseling is discouraged, guidelines are set for its use when the couple demands it. Another chapter informs clergy on victim rights under the law. Clergy are advised on the importance of effective criminal justice response in preventing and eliminating family violence. Another chapter focuses on clergy response on behalf of children in violent families. Other chapters guide clergy in medical advocacy, assistance for the abusers, and in leading the congregation to become informed about and advocates for the prevention and elimination of family violence.
