Although case management is a term increasingly used to define the support provided to persons who have substance abuse problems, little is known about the nature and extent of case management in the addiction treatment context.
Abstract
For this reason, a survey of addiction treatment programs in Ontario, Canada, was conducted to assess program perceptions of the availability and nature of case management. A questionnaire was developed and distributed to all of the 268 addiction programs in Ontario during April-September 1986; the response rate was 43 percent. Addiction programs included in the survey were detoxification, hospital-based inpatient and outpatient, community-based residential and outpatient, assessment and referral, and native alcohol and drug abuse programs. Services frequently provided as part of case management by the different addiction programs included addiction education and counseling, counseling for nonaddiction problems, detoxification and relapse support, crisis intervention, and discussing clients with other staff of the same program. Less frequently provided types of case management included seeing clients in other locations, family and marital counseling, practical help, employment and financial counseling, and liaison/advocacy with other services on the client's behalf. Similarities in case management were more apparent than differences among the addiction programs surveyed. 13 references, 2 tables, 4 figures.
