The Crime Index is comprised of seven specific crimes as defined by the Uniform Crime Reporting Committee and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. They are those offenses which are most likely to be reported to the police; their seriousness and/or frequency of occurrence provide an adequate basis for comparison. The Index crimes of murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny theft, and motor vehicle theft are substantially the same as defined by the New York State Penal Law. However, the category of murder excludes those non-negligent manslaughters where the death was caused by an intoxicated driver. Also, the burglary of an enclosed motor truck or enclosed motor truck trailer are excluded from the crime classification of burglary, but are included in the larceny theft category. Motor vehicle theft excludes the crime of unauthorized use of a vehicle. Larceny-theft excludes frauds, appropriating lost property, unlawful check use, extortion, false promise, dishonest employee, and embezzlement. In addition to felonious assault, aggravated assault also includes reckless endangerment 1 and 2, prohibited use of a weapon, assault 3, and menacing where a weapon was used in commission.
