The materials are designed to provide school personnel with the information needed to develop programs and policies to address drug abuse among students. Individual papers provide an overview of the scope and effects of drug abuse, the psychological and social variables associated with drug abuse, and the identification of drug abusers and potential drug abusers. Additional papers examine the school's role in addressing drug abuse, the major prevention approaches currently in use, the status of school-based drug abuse programs and policies in all 50 states, the principal's role in substance abuse reduction, and legal issues relating to search and seizure in the schools. Other articles discuss drug abuse by school employees; the relationship between drug abuse and social, psychological, and physical health; and methods of promoting parent involvement in drug prevention programs.
