Data on world requirements for narcotic drugs for 1990 and statistics for 1988 are intended to help producing and manufacturing countries adjust their plans to maintain a balance between supply and demand; the analytical presentation of certain tables will help researchers conducting general studies on the production, manufacture, conversion, and use of narcotic drugs.
Abstract
Following a table showing the status of countries' adherence to the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, 1961, and the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances, tables show trends in the licit movement of narcotic drugs for 1988 and estimates for 1990. Estimated world requirements for narcotic drugs are presented for 1990. Statistics cover the cultivation of papaver somniferum for the production of opium and for other purposes, the extraction of alkaloids from opium and from poppy straw, and the conversion of morphine. Data also address the manufacture and consumption of narcotic drugs, total stocks of narcotic drugs, and world trade (imports-exports) in various types of narcotics. Seizures of narcotic drugs are indicated. 17 tables and a subject index
