THE COMMUNICATION/PROTECTIVE HELMET SYSTEM CONSISTED OF A HELMET WITH FACE SHIELD AND TRANSDUCER/RECEIVER, A NECK PROTECTOR, A RADIO, AND A GAS MASK, TO BE USED BY POLICE.
Abstract
TEN OF THESE EQUIPMENT SETS WERE LABORATORY TESTED AND FORTY SETS WERE TESTED BY POTENTIAL USERS UNDER ACTUAL FIELD CONDITIONS. LABORATORY TESTING CONSISTED OF DETERMINING THE EFFECTS OF PROJECTILES, HYDROCHLORIC ACID, FLAMING GASOLINE, AND LOW VELOCITY MECHANICAL IMPACT ON THE PROTECTIVE ASSEMBLY. FIELD TESTING EVALUATIONS EMPHASIZED COMFORT, EASE OF USE, AND INTELLIGIBILITY OF RADIO RECEPTION AND TRANSMISSION. THE LAW ENFORCEMENT ORGANIZATIONS PARTICIPATING IN THE FIELD TESTING PHASE OF THIS PROJECT INCLUDE- THE MARYLAND STATE POLICE, THE CITY OF MIAMI POLICE, THE CITY OF DETROIT POLICE, AND THE CITY OF BOSTON POLICE. LABORATORY AND FIELD TEST RESULTS ARE PRESENTED AND DISCUSSED. APPENDED MATERIAL INCLUDES THE QUESTIONNAIRE USED IN THE FIELD TESTING AND BALLISTIC TEST DATA.
