This report presents the texts of the plenary sessions and workshops of a May 1987 conference that focused on the nature and extent of the alcohol and other drug abuse problems in black communities in the United States and on effective responses based on prevention.
Abstract
Individual sessions focused on exemplary prevention models, strategies for networking and coalition building, the role of voluntary associations in community-based efforts in substance abuse prevention, and drug law enforcement. Additional sessions considered the use of the media in prevention efforts, media accountability and responsibility, the connection between athletics and substance abuse, and alcohol and other drug abuse in the workplace. Family issues, the role of religious institutions, the relationship between AIDS and substance abuse and its impact in black communities, and the link between substance abuse and violence were also discussed.
