This report presents summaries of courses and outlines of curriculum components designed to provide correctional drug treatment counselors in Connecticut with the information and skills needed to inform, motivate, guide, and assist alcoholics and other drug abusers and persons affected by problems related to substance abuse.
Abstract
A correctional drug abuse counselor must perform 13 tasks, including intake, evaluation, orientation and motivation, treatment planning, consultation and referral, alcoholism and drug abuse education, individual counseling, group counseling, working with family and significant others, report and recordkeeping, use of community resources, client followup, and crisis intervention. Basic training areas for the first year include an overview of substance abuse, chemically dependent family systems, the group counseling process, relapse prevention, 12-step programs, case and file management, professional ethics, and other topics. Later training should focus on individual counseling and communications skills, the roles of counseling and treatment methods, confidentiality, group dynamics, crisis intervention, problemsolving, assertiveness training, and several other topics. Lists of course topics and time requirements
