For the past six years, the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai Brith (ADL) has been monitoring and exposing the activities of Skinheads, neo-Nazi groups notable for their appearance, beliefs, cultural tastes, and most importantly, racially-motivated violence. This report provides an update on Skinhead activity in the U.S.
Abstract
The latest ADL survey indicates that current membership in Skinhead groups numbers approximately 3000, the same level recorded in the 1989 survey. Furthermore, there are indications that the frequency and severity of crimes committed by Skinheads has decreased slightly, probably due to the efforts of law enforcement authorities and civil rights organizations. Other trends noted in this report: Skinheads are recruiting younger and younger persons, usually in the vicinity of schools; much Skinhead violence is internecine; there is no central neo-Nazi Skinhead organization; Skinheads are actively encouraged by many old-line hate groups. The report provides detailed information on Skinhead activity in each State. Most observers agree that Skinheads come from troubled family backgrounds, and that their violence reflects their anger and feelings of helplessness. 2 appendixes
