Abstract
Incarceration rates for each county are included along with the number of overcrowded county detention facilities and the pretrial inmate levels. There were on average 34,102 inmates in Florida's county detention facilities during May 1991, an 0.5 percent increase over the inmate population reported for April 1991. Of the total inmate population, 74.7 percent were incarcerated for felony offenses and 20.1 percent for misdemeanor crimes. The statewide county detention incarceration rate was 2.5 per 1,000 county residents. Fourteen of the counties (20.89 percent) had average daily inmate populations in excess of their Department of Corrections rated capacity. Of the 19,920 inmates housed in county detention facilities awaiting trial, 85.0 percent were awaiting trial for felony offenses and 15.0 percent for misdemeanor violations. 6 figures and 4 tables (Author abstract modified)
