Abstract
In addition to average daily population figures for male and female categories and juvenile and adult populations, data is presented on offense classifications, incarceration rates, overcrowding, and pretrial population levels. On average, there were 33,999 inmates in county detention facilities during April 1991, a 1.4 percent decrease from March 1991. The statewide average daily population totals include 29,558 adult males (87.1 percent), 3,519 adult females (10.4 percent), and 862 juvenile offenders (2.5 percent). Of the total inmate population, 75.0 percent were incarcerated for felony offenses, 20.1 percent for misdemeanor crimes, and 4.9 percent for all other crimes. Fourteen of the counties (20.89 percent) had average daily inmate populations which exceeded their rated capacity; 53 (79.11 percent) of Florida's counties were at or below capacity. Of the 20,080 inmates housed in detention facilities awaiting trial, 85.3 percent were awaiting trial for felony offenses and 14.7 percent for misdemeanor violations. 3 figures and 4 tables (Author abstract modified)
