This curriculum model provides a flexible framework for classroom-based, substance-abuse prevention efforts in kindergarten through grade 12.
Abstract
The introduction discusses the role of prevention, how to use the curriculum model, the identification of students at risk for drug use, the integration of curricula and materials, guidelines for curriculum presentation, and evaluation. Subsequent sections provide information and materials for kindergarten through grade 3, grades 4-6, grades 7-8, and grades 9-12. The materials for each of these sections encompass background for teachers, facts about alcohol and other drugs, working with parents, working with the community, and lesson plans and activities. A section on resources addresses parental consent requirements, parent-child communication tips, facts about AIDS, signs of drug use, school and community resources, sources of information, and specific drugs and their effects. The premise of the curriculum model is that most youths do not use drugs. One of its primary purposes is to enhance the development of life skills that keep youth from using drugs. Although the curriculum model includes information about drugs and drug use, it focuses primarily on positive prevention messages.
