This paper summarizes research that concludes that, compared with their nondelinquent peers, male and female delinquents and predelinquents who have been handled by social welfare agencies for their behavior disturbances perceive their parents as rather cold, aggressive, indifferent persons who are inclined to child neglect.
Abstract
This inadequate parental child rearing is connected with unacceptable behavior. Compared with males, females with behavior disturbances perceive their mothers as being considerably warmer and better. However, the mothers' behavior is closely connected with their daughters' delinquent and deviant behavior, because of the daughters' identification with their mothers and with their sex roles. This research also indicates the need to gather separate data from fathers and mothers regarding child-rearing practices and to create a questionnaire about child-rearing styles that is adjusted to the particular circumstances.
