EXAMINES THE HISTORICAL, PHILOSOPHICAL, AND LEGAL FRAMEWORK OF INSTITUTIONS, PROBATION, AND PAROLE AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE FIELD.
Abstract
IN THE FIRST SECTION ON CORRECTIONS AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE, A HISTORY OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF CORRECTIONS IS PRESENTED ALONG WITH A DISCUSSION OF CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE FIELD OF CORRECTIONS. THIS SECTION ELABORATES UPON THE ACTION TAKEN AGAINST LAW BREAKERS AND DESCRIBES THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM WITH ITS THREE ORGANIZED PARTS - POLICE, COURTS, AND CORRECTIONS. THE AUTHORS ALSO ANALYZE THE SCOPE OF THE CRIME PROBLEM IN THE UNITED STATES AND DEAL WITH THE JUDICIAL PROCESS AND JUDICIAL CRIMINAL STATISTICS. ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO THE POLICE ROLE IN THE SYSTEM OF CORRECTIONS. IN THE SECOND SECTION THE AUTHORS BEGIN BY DISCUSSING TOPICS SUCH AS RESEARCH REGARDING PUNISHMENT, THEORETICAL REASONS FOR PUNISHMENT, CHARACTERISTICS OF CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION POPULATIONS, AND THE RATIONALE FOR PAROLE. HIGHLIGHTS ARE THEN GIVEN ON ASPECTS OF THE FOUR BASIC CONCERNS OF COMMUNITY-BASED CORRECTIONS - PROBATION, PAROLE, SPECIAL COMMUNITY-BASED PROGRAMS, AND INTERSTATE COMPACT AGREEMENTS REGARDING PROBATION AND PAROLE. A CHAPTER DEVOTED TO CHARACTERISTICS OF NATIONAL AND LOCAL CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS DEALS WITH TOPICS SUCH AS JAILS, JUVENILE INSTITUTIONS, WOMEN'S INSTITUTIONS, INSTITUTIONAL SECURITY, CAMPS, WORK PROGRAMS, EDUCATION PROGRAMS, TREATMENT, AND HALFWAY HOUSES. COMMENTS ARE MADE ON INFORMATION ABOUT OFFENDERS DERIVED FROM THE BIOLOGICAL, SOCIOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL THEORIES OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR. THE FINAL SECTION ON THE METHODS OF CORRECTIONS DEALS WITH THE MODIFICATION OF DEVIANT BEHAVIOR, SPECIAL PROBLEMS IN CORRECTIONS, AND SPECULATION REGARDING THE FUTURE OF CORRECTIONS. TOPICS COVERED INCLUDE PUNISHMENT, CORRECTIONAL CASEWORK, REHABILITATIVE TRENDS IN GROUP METHODS, DRUG ABUSE, AND ILLICIT SEXUAL BEHAVIOR.
