The implementation of two substance abuse prevention curricula in three Oregon school districts was evaluated regarding cost, time analysis, and teacher perception.
Abstract
The education curricula implemented the "Here's Looking at You, Two," (HLAY, II) for kindergarten (K) through 12th grade and the "Starting Early" curriculum for grades K through 6. Using a 43-item personal interview questionnaire, data related to time spent in inservice thraining, preparation, and teacher perceptions were collected from 44 randomly selected teachers in 21 different Oregon public schools. Coordinators for each district provided information related to costs in dollars and teacher inservice courses to implement the curricula for 4,325 students. Teachers' perceptions related to their responsibility for implementing the program, quality of the curriculum, quality of the inservice, quality of the implementation procedures, and degree of teacher compliance for teaching the curriculum. The time teachers spent to prepare and teach the two drug education curricula varied widely, probably because of individual preferences, methods of teaching, and background for teaching drug education. The results of this survey could provide useful information for those involved in the planning and implementation of school based drug education programs. 4 tables and 18 references (Author abstract modified)
