Violent crime and drug law offenses are major problems in the United States, and the FBI is making major efforts to address both problems.
Abstract
The FBI both investigates violent crimes and aids State and local investigations, operating fugitive task forces in eight field offices, providing fingerprint identification and laboratory services, and maintaining computer databases such as the National Crime Information Center and the National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime. The FBI also has a 2-part strategy for addressing drug law offenses. These include an attack on the suppliers of drugs and an attack on the demand for illegal drugs. The FBI cooperates with other Federal, State, and local agencies to reduce supply through implementation of the FBI national Drug Strategy. In addition, FBI personnel in 17 countries serve as liaison for foreign law enforcement agencies and governments to obtain and share information regarding drug smuggling, money laundering, and other offenses. In 1988, the FBI also established a Drug Demand Reduction Program, an educational program designed to support community efforts to reduce the demand for drugs. With coordinated and cooperative efforts, the problems of drug abuse and violent crime can be eliminated in the United States.
