There were 1,879 anti-Semitic incidents reported to the Anti-Defamation League during 1991. Reports from 42 States, the District of Columbia, and the Virgin Islands showed the highest overall total of incidents recorded in the 13-year history of the annual audit. There were 929 incidents of vandalism in 1991 compared to 927 in 1990. Anti-Semitic harassment, threats, and assaults reached the highest level ever reported (950 incidents, a 25-percent increase over 1990). In 1991 there were 60 reported cases of physical attack including one murder. The year also involved the greatest number of serious crimes yet reported. There were 49 vandalism episodes of arson, bombing, and cemetery desecration (a 29-percent increase over the previous high of 38 in both 1990 and 1989). Anti-Jewish incidents on U.S. college campuses rose to the highest level ever, continuing a trend for the last 4 years. Politically related anti-Semitism incidents, stemming largely from Operation Desert Storm in January and February, also increased. Skinhead-related, anti-Semitic incidents were down significantly, however.
