A unit on the placement and goals of corrections contains chapters on corrections and the criminal justice system, the setting for corrections, the history and competing aims of corrections, and sentencing. A unit on incarceration focuses on jails, prison facilities and populations, inmate life and prisoner rights, prison programs and management, and female inmates. A unit on alternatives to incarceration addresses community-based corrections, probation, and parole. The unit on juvenile offenders discusses juvenile law, juvenile offenders, and the treatment for juvenile offenders. The concluding unit examines selected national correctional issues. These are imprisonment rate, race and imprisonment, the privatization of prisons and jails, and the death sentence. Each chapter begins with an outline of the material and a listing of key terms. A chapter summary is provided along with suggestions for discussion topics. Additional readings are provided for each chapter.
