Summary statewide data indicate that nearly 9 out of 10 youth committed to institutions were boys, and over one-half of the youth committed were white. Forty-four percent of those committed had a history of drug use. Approximately 1 out of 4 youth were committed for crimes against a person. The committed youth averaged the ninth grade level in school. Approximately 1 out of 10 youth were recommitted. The average age of committed youth was 15.2 years. Two out of three youth committed were from a metropolitan area. One-half of prior adjudications were for property offenses; 37 percent were referred to a juvenile court before their 13th birthday.
