Abstract
The Kansas Department of Corrections is responsible for the community based supervision of adult parolees who have been conditionally released from prison, but who have not yet been discharged from their sentence. The department performs its parole functions through five regions designated to facilitate management objectives and service delivery. The Kansas Community Corrections Act of 1978 authorized a number of programs intended to reduce prison overcrowding by providing the courts with additional sentencing options. These include restitution; victim services; preventive or diversionary correctional programs; and facilities for the detention, confinement, care, and treatment of adult and juvenile offenders. Each community corrections comprehensive plan must include either an adult intensive supervision or adult residential service program. Finally, the 104-bed Labette County Correctional Conservation Camp is designed to enhance the physical and emotional stability of prisoners through discipline, physical conditioning, work assignments, external controls, education, and counseling.
