Children's Aid Society social workers in the metro Toronto area have developed a model for immediate assessment and intervention for male juvenile sex offenders who have admitted to sexual offending, do not have major mental health problems, and have given informed consent to their participation in the assessment.
Abstract
This model combines assessment and treatment components in order to meet its five primary goals: to monitor the risk of reoffending; to develop the offender's amenability for treatment; to compile a personal history of sexual, social, and family dynamics; to compile a treatment needs evaluation; and to prepare an assessment report for court. Active participation in this type of assessment process can provide a means of monitoring the offender and holding him immediately accountable and responsible for his abusive actions. The juvenile offender has his defense mechanisms of minimization and rationalization challenged before they become further ingrained. The assessment requires the informed consent of the adolescent and his parents before participation. In addition, legal counsel is strongly recommended before the family agrees to become involved in the program. 2 notes and 6 references
