Abstract
The first chapter presents essential data about the current crime scene and kids. This encompasses the use of a support network, the use of crimeproofing tactics, avoidance of the image of being a vulnerable target, parental role- modeling for crime prevention, bridging the generation gap, child protection networking, and damage control. The second chapter presents the seven major generic crime-protection strategies. These are keep in touch, teach your children well, close and lock, go public, pick your spots, check it out, and avoid conflict. The remaining four chapters provide details on how to apply these strategies in various contexts. A chapter that outlines tactics for creating a secure home environment addresses such issues as the choice about where to live, crimeproofing a house's exterior, securing doors and windows, screening callers, security alarms, use of the telephone, mailbox security, the family dog, the gun gamble, and choosing baby-sitters. A chapter on "going out safely with kids" focuses on such matters as staying together and staying public, car security, restroom safety, dealing with robbery, and surviving street violence. The remaining two chapters discuss how to safeguard kids as they venture out on their own and steps for navigating the teen years and how to deal with the many situations that might arise.
