This staff training, program organization, and personal safety curriculum, referred to as Housewise Streetwise (HWSW), is designed to teach abuse prevention and survival skills in a positive and practical way to third graders but can also be used for grades four and five, youth groups, youth in public housing projects, and youth served by community organizations.
Abstract
The HWSW program was developed for the third grade because it complements the social studies curriculum and because 8-year-old children are becoming more independent. HWSW is an 8-hour program taught for 6 days by parents, teachers, and community helpers. The program teaches children how to make emergency phone calls and how to react to dangerous and potentially dangerous situations, identifies community helpers, and encourages discussion of real problems. The staff training component of the curriculum covers victimization, preparing children to respond safely to dangerous situations, identifying abused and mistreated children, and State legal requirements for reporting abuse. The program organization component identifies daily activities and provides information on teaching methods and materials and program costs. The actual curriculum outlines daily activities, includes activity sheets, and lists optional activities and resources.
