Abstract
Average daily population figures are collapsed into male and female categories for adults and juveniles, and are categorized as felony, misdemeanor, and other (parole violators, State inmates, undocumented aliens, holdings for other jurisdictions, and persons detained under mental health and alcoholism statutes). In March 1993, the average daily population figure was 34,065, representing a decrease of 0.7 percent from February and an incarceration rate of 2.5 per 1,000 residents. Eighty-seven percent of the inmates were adults. Over 70 percent were incarcerated for felony offenses. Offenders held for trial accounted for 57.2 percent of inmates; 26.1 percent were sentenced on felony or misdemeanor convictions. Inmates revoked for probation violations represented 7 percent of the population. During the reporting period, nearly 15 percent of the State facilities had populations exceeding their rated capacity. 4 tables and 3 figures
