Community policing is a philosophy of policing that focuses on local problems and community involvement in crime prevention and problem solving. Community Patrol Officers are assigned a permanent beat and are trained as problem solvers, organizers, and planners. Residents are encouraged to exchange information with the beat officer, thereby helping to set Department priorities and policies. Each precinct has a Community Affairs Officer who coordinates special programs such as the Drug Buster Program, Block Watch, tenant and neighborhood patrol groups, and the Precinct Community Council and Youth Council.
