This book presents a series of international studies on hate crimes that are grounded in the principles of social science research, social and political theory, and public policy analysis.
Abstract
In this attempt to describe the criminology of hate crimes and prescribe effective ways to counter it, the authors of these pieces address the questions of the incidence and prevalence of hate crime in various nation-states and the risk that hate crimes present to global security. The individual chapters discuss results from a victimization survey conducted among immigrants in London, England; a survey of German social scientific literature on right-wing violence; legal reactions to racism in Scandinavia; a comparison of State responses to racist violence in Europe; an ethnographic assessment of American neo-Nazi skinheads; and hate crime legislation in Canada. The final chapter presents a global context within which hate crime can be conceptualized. Chapter references
