Directed mainly to parents and youths, this manual describes the warning signs that a child may be involved with a gang or drugs, suggests preventive measures, and lists characteristics of Los Angeles gangs.
Abstract
Typical pregang behavior includes poor school achievement, truancy, lack of hobbies, and problems at home. Parents should be concerned if their child wants an excessive amount of blue or red for their wardrobe, wears sagging pants on the hips or waists or an excessive amount of gold jewelry, or uses excessive gang verbiage, and hand signs. Types of gangs include black gangs, Hispanic gangs, white gangs, immigrant gangs, Asian gangs, and hybrid gangs. Types of gang members include gang bangers, dope dealers, shot callers, wannabes, and dope dealers/high rollers/ballers. Areas of focus for gang prevention include activities such as sports and clubs, non- gang friends, and family involvement. Youth should be aware of negative peer pressure and risky situations to avoid. Statistics on children's problems and lists of community resources and gang slang terms
