Abstract
The Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB) held a forum on the Prevention of Adolescent Female Gang Involvement March 24-25, 1993 in Bethesda, Maryland. This meeting brought together representatives from 11 FYSB-funded projects that have developed strategies and interventions to reach and help adolescent females at risk of gang involvement. This publication summarizes the highlights of presentations at that forum. Included are articles discussing: a NBC News Video entitled "Bad Girl;" adolescent females at risk: target populations; the effects of domestic violence on adolescent females; the activities of various youth assistance programs including the Empowerment Program in Denver, Colorado; the Community Youth Initiative Project of Grace Hill Neighborhood Services in St. Louis, Missouri; the Las Jovenes Y Las Gangas Project in Hartford, Connecticut; the Earthwinds Adolescent Girls Group in Minnesota; the Young Women's Project and the Seattle Team for Youth in Seattle, Washington; the Above and Beyond Program of the Stockton Unified School District in California; the Females Obtaining Resources and Cultural Enrichment Program in Boston, Massachusetts; the Girls Leadership Project in Washington, D.C.; and the Movimento Ascendencia Project in Pueblo, Colorado. Outlines of services and objectives to address the needs of individual young women, families, and communities, new approaches to address deficiencies in the delivery of services, suggestions to prepare staff to address gaps in the delivery of services, and a guideline to identify alternate funding sources and obtain continued funding after Federal support is terminated also are provided.
