This report presents the results of the Brady Act/Child Protection Act Survey of State Criminal History Information Systems conducted in March 1994 and covering 1993.
Abstract

Fifty-six jurisdictions were surveyed, including the 50 States, American Samoa, the District of Columbia, Guam, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Trust Territory of the Pacific, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Responses were received from all 56 jurisdictions. Findings on the level of automation of master name indexes and criminal history files include tables on an overview of State criminal history record systems for 1993, as well as the automation of master name index and criminal history files. Tables on the level of disposition reporting include an overview of State criminal history record systems and the number of final dispositions reported to State criminal history repositories. A table on the level of felony "flagging" consists of an overview of State criminal history record systems. A table pertinent to the timeliness of trial court disposition data focuses on the average number of days to process disposition data submitted to State criminal history repositories. Other tables are relevant to the presale record checks on potential firearm purchasers, the status of State criminal history files, the completeness of data in State criminal history repositories, disposition data, correctional data, the timeliness of data in State criminal history repositories, procedures to improve data quality, the linking of arrests and dispositions, and other data quality procedures. 28 tables
