Abstract
The Violent Crime Strike Force was established to assist local law enforcement agencies. Drug Task Force operations resulted in the seizure of $3,753,000 in assets from 400 drug cases. During the first full year of the Insurance Fraud Unit's operation, 253 written complaints were received that involved $7.5 million in suspected fraud. Other Maryland State Police initiatives during 1993 included a program to destroy all confiscated firearms in lieu of selling them to licensed firearm dealers, the Safe Streets Task Force, control over the sale of weapons at gun shows, a multijurisdictional task force to address vehicle theft and carjacking, drug abuse education in schools, criminal investigation centralization, police officer body armor purchases, and issuance of oleoresin capsicum (pepper mace) to all sworn police officers. Activities of the Maryland State Police's Field Operations Bureau are detailed, with supporting data provided on service calls. 2 tables and 2 figures
