Abstract
One chapter notes lagging family income and rising child poverty and suggests how this condition can be countered. This is followed by a section on the health of America's children. Topics discussed include the Clinton Administration's proposal to reform health care, States' expansion of children's health coverage, the Federal immunization initiative, community response, and opportunities to help children. A section on children and families in crisis notes the breakdown in family structure and the associated disintegration of parental moral instruction, role modeling, and relational bonds. Other topics discussed in major sections are child care and early childhood development, housing and homelessness, hunger and nutrition, adolescent pregnancy prevention and youth development, and violence. The section on violence focuses on gun control, risk factors for violent crime, increasing access to guns, and media violence. Extensive figures and tables with data pertinent to the state of America's children
