NCMEC's mission is to assist in the search for missing children and prevent child victimization, focusing upon abduction, molestation, and sexual exploitation. NCMEC is a private, nonprofit organization that works with the U.S. Justice Department's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. Among its accomplishments since its founding in 1984 are its handling of 760,864 calls through its 24-hour, toll-free Hotline; the training of 129,453 police and other professionals; the printing of 8.2 million publications that have been disseminated free to families and professionals; and working with law enforcement agencies on 38,573 missing-child cases, resulting in the recovery of 25,169 children. The core of the report consists of statements on the need and recommendations for action in the following areas: National Missing Children's Network, nonfamily abduction, missing children and the schools, family abduction, international child abduction, sexual victimization of children, child pornography and prostitution, background screening, services for child victims, and prevention.
