This issue of a weekly publication explores various aspects of gun control. The passage of the Brady bill, requiring a 5-day waiting period for handgun purchases, and movement toward banning 19 models of assault weapons, appear to point toward a weakening of the gun lobby. Gun control opponents, however, predict gun owners will unseat lawmakers who voted for these respective bills. This issue includes discussions of Americans' historical attachment to firearms, the Second Amendment of the Constitution, gun control legislation emerging in response to the gun violence in the 1960s accompanied by a chronological overview of pertinent legislation, and actions by various States. The current state of gun control and the Brady bill are explored.
