This report highlights the 1993 activities of the Drug Enforcement Administration in terms of clandestine drug laboratory seizures in the United States. Laboratory seizures reflect both regional and national trends in manufacturing, trafficking, and availability of clandestinely produced controlled substances.
Abstract
During 1993, DEA agents seized 270 clandestine laboratories, mostly in the West and Southwest regions of the U.S., representing a decrease of 19 percent from the previous year and the fourth consecutive year in which the number of laboratory seizures fell. Much of the decline may be attributed to enforcement of the Chemical Diversion and Trafficking Act of 1988, which enabled the Federal Government to regulate listed chemicals used in the production of illegal synthetic drugs. Traditionally found in rural areas, laboratories are being located in urban and suburban neighborhoods to avoid detection. Methamphetamine remained the most prevalent illicitly manufactured controlled substance in the U.S. during 1993. 13 figures and 3 appendixes
