For fiscal year 1995 a new overarching program has been created, "SafeFutures: Partnerships To Reduce Youth Violence and Delinquency." this collaborative program, designed to enhance the implementation of the Comprehensive Strategy for Serious, Violent, and Chronic Juvenile Offenders, requires all community sectors to participate in the determination of local needs and the planning and implementation of programs to meet those needs through a continuum of care. A total of $7,200,000 is available under this program to support first-year awards to five units of local government. Grants are offered for each program component. Other grants are offered in the general areas of "Strengthening Juvenile Justice," "Public Safety," and "Delinquency Prevention." Grants offered to strengthen juvenile justice focus on interventions to reduce disproportionate minority confinement in secure detention and technical assistance to juvenile corrections and detention. Grants in the area of public safety address gangs and delinquency research; field-initiated gang research; juvenile transfers to criminal court studies; and gangs, groups, individuals, and violence intervention. Grants for delinquency prevention focus on innovative approaches in law-related education, Pathways to Success, training and technical assistance for family strengthening programs, and youth-centered conflict resolution.
