This workshop guide and the two accompanying videotapes are intended for use to providing half-day or full-day workshops designed to bring together community groups and individuals to prevent and address youth violence.
Abstract
The manual presents workshop agendas that can be adapted to participants' needs. The half-day workshop is designed for groups from a school, small district, or single social service agencies. The full-day workshop focuses on how representatives from a wide array of organizations can use their joint resources and expertise to plan an effective campaign to prevent youth violence. The videotapes demonstrate how three different model programs work to prevent violence before it starts, to intervene with young people who are prone to violence, and to work with juvenile offenders to prevent recidivism. One program focuses on reducing impulsive and aggressive behavior in children and on providing them with skills for prosocial behavior. A second program focuses on training teachers and students to adopt nonviolent alternatives to aggression, including conflict resolution and negotiation. The third program provides comprehensive counseling and treatment to court-adjudicated youths and their families in their homes and communities with lower costs and superior results to those of residential treatment and incarceration.
