This article highlights four of the sixty-seven recommendations from the task forces established by Nevada¦s Judicial Assessment Commission, a panel of lawyers and nonlawyers created in 1993 by the Chief Justice of the Nevada Supreme Court. The Commission's purpose was to determine how Nevada's urban courts in Clark County and Washoe County could best meet the demands of the Nation's fastest growing State. The four recommendations address the creation of a statewide, representative judicial council to administer the state judiciary, a Nevada Plan for selecting judges in the general jurisdiction district courts and for the State supreme court, the privatization of parking and traffic cases, and the expanded use of drug courts. Other recommendations noted briefly include reducing the possession of small amounts of marijuana charge from a felony to a misdemeanor and the charge of under-the- influence of a controlled substance also to a misdemeanor. The Commission also recommends that the news media set standards for themselves to ensure accountability and accuracy of the information they disseminate with the goal of eliminating the sensationalization of violent crime.
