This volume describes approximately 60 successful State and local programs to address drug abuse, violent crime, or both; the programs are primarily the result of program development and implementation activities supported by the Bureau of Justice (BJA) Assistance's Formula Grant Program to State and local governments and organizations.
Abstract
Some programs were developed with BJA funding through its Discretionary Grant Program; a few programs were established and sustained with little or no Federal funding. The programs were discussed at three meetings. One meeting focused on effective interagency collaborations to improve the criminal justice system at the State and local levels. Another meeting focused on programs related to youth, drugs, and violence. The third focused on innovative court programs. Program components include alternative sanctions, repeat offender programs, community policing, community revitalization, early intervention, conflict resolution, probation and parole, restitution, school-based programs, technical assistance, training manuals, treatment, victim services, and others. Each program is described in terms of the problem it addresses, the goals and objectives, the program components, the results and impact, implementation problems, prospects for replication, organization address, contact person, and telephone and fax numbers.
