The discussion emphasizes the need for different strategies to control urban crime and drug problems in Albuquerque and the crime and drug problems in the largely rural areas of the State. To develop the strategies, the Department of Public Safety held public meetings, discussed issues with State and local officials, surveyed police agencies, and analyzed studies of public attitudes. A crucial component of the strategy is to empower local agencies to identify their unique concerns, with emphasis on community policing. Police agencies across New Mexico will be implementing this approach to community law enforcement over the next several years with the addition of federally funded police officers.
