A hearing was held by the House Select Committee on Narcotics Abuse and Control in June 1991 to consider progress made in curtailing drug smuggling to the United States from the Andean countries of Peru, Bolivia, and Colombia.
Abstract
Opening remarks at the hearing noted that the Andean strategy is an important part of the U.S. drug war and that the United States emphasizes both drug supply and demand reduction. Additionally, opening comments explored the extent and efficacy of counternarcotics assistance to Andean countries. Hearing witnesses discussed the transshipment of precursor chemicals used in drug manufacture, Federal drug interdiction efforts, money laundering, U.S. drug policies, coca production in Bolivia, the progress of counternarcotics programs in the Andean countries, and multilateral initiatives to control drug trafficking.
