This video explains and dramatizes a four-step process for children to use in countering bullying.
Abstract
Introduced by basketball legend Kareem Abdul Jabbar, the four-step process consists of "avoid," "surprise," "stun," and "run." Childrenexplain and demonstrate the techniques recommended. The first step, "avoid," consists of techniques designed to prevent contact with bullies. Techniques involve the use of positive body language that communicates confidence and the ability to control situations. Other suggestions include avoiding situations likely to entice a bully, and being cautious and observant. The second step, "surprise," involves taking affirmative measures, when approached by a bully, to prevent a physical attack. Techniques show how to protect personal space, assume a defensive stance, maintain eye contact, use firm voice inflection, and analyze and choose safe options. Step three, "stun," involves techniques to use as a last resort as a bully begins a physical attack. Ten techniques are designed to distract and disable the bully long enough to permit running to a safe place. Techniques are suggested for saying "no" to peer pressure to engage in potentially harmful behavior. The fourth step, "run," is designed to prevent prolonged confrontation and the possibility of serious injury.
