Volume I of the proceedings of the third meeting of the Maryland Statewide Epidemiology Work Group (SEWG) (May 1993) presents highlights of drug data reported by State and county representatives, along with a SEWG membership list, the agenda from the meeting, an overview of the speakers' presentations, a list of attendees, and results of the SEWG survey.
Abstract
Representatives of participating jurisdictions are responsible for forming Drug Epidemiology Networks (DENs). Each DEN -- composed of representatives from local law enforcement, treatment, prevention, education, and public health agencies -- meets regularly to analyze local indicators for patterns and trends in the local drug problem. This report contains highlights of DEN reports from Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Harford County, Prince George's County, and St. Mary's County. The DEN reports generally discuss drug and alcohol use patterns in the jurisdiction. The report for Baltimore County includes information on juvenile arrests for drug possession, juvenile justice intakes for alcohol, and juvenile drug treatment admissions. Similar information is provided for Harford County. The Prince George's County report provides information on funding reductions for treatment, the testing of pregnant patients for substance abuse, and AIDS cases. The St. Mary's County report focuses on alcohol abuse patterns, since alcohol continues to be the drug of choice in this county. Highlights of State agency reports are presented from State representatives of the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration, the Maryland State Department of Education, the Office of Traffic Safety, and the Maryland State Police. Topics covered include treatment trends and patterns, the 1992-93 Maryland Adolescent Survey, the State Highway Safety Program, and using police intelligence to help the Baltimore City "Weed and Seed" program. Highlights of speaker remarks address an ethnographic pilot study in Baltimore, and drug trends and patterns in Washington, D.C.
