Abstract
The World Health Organization identifies seven types of drugs of dependency: alcohol and barbiturate (Seconal, for example); amphetamine; cannabis; cocaine/crack; hallucinogen (LSD, mescaline, PCP); opiates (heroin, morphine, Demerol); and volatile inhalants (toluene, acetone, freon). The document contains brief descriptions of each, some of the behavioral and physical symptoms associated with dependency and abuse, and the dangers associated with their abuse. There is a list of behavior patterns frequently associated with dependent drug abuse, and factors that influence drugs' effects. A separate chart includes comments on the strengths and weaknesses of six methods of identifying drug abuse: behavioral observation, self-reports, interviews, legal problems, background check, and drug testing. There is an illustrated explanation of how pupils' size and reaction to light can be indicators of a their drug use. References
