This article discusses how law enforcement agencies can use laptop computers to simplify their work and more effectively serve their communities.
Abstract
Laptop computers are designed for portability, and law enforcement officers can take them to a crime scene or to a complainant's location. They can be used with cellular phone-based systems to send and receive data from remote sites. They reduce the time that law enforcement officers spend completing paperwork and obtaining critical reference information. One way laptops simplify paperwork is with forms-based software which allows law enforcement agencies to automate their forms and reports and access data files quickly. Data transfer is also made simpler and faster through the use of laptops in conjunction with cellular technology. Officers can search reference materials and do research in numerous electronic databases, including those available on the Internet. Laptops can be mounted directly into patrol vehicles, allowing an officer to query motor vehicle databases before leaving the vehicle to approach potential suspects. Endnotes
